Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter by Seth Grahame-Smith
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
I have conflicted feelings towards this book. On the one hand, just the title itself I find almost blasphemous to a great man. To trivialize such a legend with a vampire tale is something I find borderline insulting, and reading it did sometimes give me the feeling of being a crossover fanfiction (and I really don’t like crossover fanfictions). I don’t get what it is the author aims for with this book, what he wants to get across.
On the other hand, the book was fairly well written, and at times both funny, grotesque and had a very interesting narrative. I wanted to know what would happen in the next chapter. So story-wise, it was a good read. (Yet I am stil baffled by the contrast of the easy and almost superficial language, combined with grusome details of horror). The concept itself is also strangely fascinating, even though I don’t really like it.
So I’m not really sure what to think of this book, I can’t fit it into any of the catgories I’m familiar with. Which is both annoying and intriguing. I can’t say that I would recommend it, but not sure if I would dissuade someone from reading it either.
